Towards Biblical Educational Learning Theories: The Theo-Educational Tetrad as a Biblical Alternative to Secular Educational Models
This paper examines the development of biblical learning theories through the framework of the Theo-Educational Tetrad— Theogogy (God’s method of teaching), Christogogy (Christ’s method of teaching), Pneumagogy (the Holy Spirit’s method of teaching), and Bibliogogy (Scripture-based teaching)—as the divine structure of learning. Unlike secular educational models that often centres on human rationality, constructivism, or behaviourist paradigms, biblical learning theories ground education in divine revelation. The study adopts Sola Scriptura methodology and the Scriptural Review method, affirming the authority, sufficiency, and clarity of Scripture as the guiding principle for theological reflection and educational practice. The paper argues that authentic Biblical Christian Education must be rooted in God’s teaching (Theogogy), Christ’s Theo-pedagogical model (Christogogy), the Spirit’s transformative instruction (Pneumagogy), and the Scripture’s authoritative guidance (Bibliogogy). Therefore, the paper proposes this Tetrad as a theological alternative to secular learning theories, ensuring that biblical Christian education maintains its distinctive identity, biblical foundation, and transformative mission. This approach not only secures the Tetrad on biblical grounds but also challenges contemporary reliance on extra-biblical philosophies of education. It also helps to repudiate speculative theories that reduce education to human-centre constructs, affirming instead that true education begins with God and is orientated towards Him. This study provides a biblically faithful, theologically sound framework for biblical and theological education, calling the church to make bibliogogics the primary pursuit of its ministry, that believers may learn and know God better.
