Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-related gastric ulcer in an older Asian female: A case study
This case study describes a woman in her 60s from Southeast Asia who presented with nonspecific symptoms, including chest discomfort, exertional shortness of breath, and fatigue. Her family took her to the emergency department because they were concerned that "she did not look well". Further evaluation revealed two episodes of melena and habitual overuse of alternating Tylenol and Aleve for back pain following a recent minor compression fracture. Diagnostic testing identified a gastric ulcer, likely caused by Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use. This case emphasizes the importance of thorough medication history-taking, culturally sensitive assessment, and safe pain management in older adults. Nurses play a vital role in recognizing atypical signs of gastrointestinal bleeding and preventing preventable complications through patient-centered care and education.
