Utilization of novel bio-based monomers in carbon-negative polymer synthesis: new frontiers in sustainable organic chemistry

The increasing urgency to mitigate climate change has intensified the search for sustainable and carbon-negative alternatives in polymer chemistry. This study explores the utilization of novel bio-based monomers derived from renewable resources for the synthesis of carbon-negative polymers. These monomers such as lignin derivatives, furan-based compounds (e.g., 5-hydroxymethylfurfural), and plant-based acids offer a promising foundation for developing environmentally friendly materials. We examine innovative polymerization strategies, including enzymatic and green catalytic methods, that enable efficient conversion of these bio-monomers into functional polymers with reduced carbon footprints. The potential industrial applications of these materials span packaging, biomedical devices, and advanced composites. By highlighting current challenges and technological opportunities, this study defines new frontiers in sustainable organic chemistry and promotes the shift toward a circular and decarbonized materials economy.
