Economic importance of oil fields in Basra Governorate - Iraq using Geoinformatics

The Iraqi economy depends heavily on oil from its production to its marketing, as its economy is primarily oil-based at 90%, and Basra Governorate includes a share of 85% of the total state revenues. In 1949, the giant Zubair field was discovered in Basra Governorate by the Basra Oil Company, then came the discovery of several large oil fields such as (Qurna, Rumaila, Nahr Omar, Majnoon, Hass, Toba, Artawi and others, after developing the oil field in Basra Governorate from the exploratory stage to the production stage, then the governorate field participated by more than 85% in the state economy revenues, Basra Governorate is part of the large oil basin that covers a large area of Iraq's lands, and this basin is located in southern Iraq, and oil is found in Basra in large areas extending from the northwest of Basra Governorate to the southeast, and oil springs have appeared on the surface of the earth in many locations in the form of an intermittent strip along which oil seeps are located, as statistics indicate that it owns 15 fields out of 77 known fields, including 10 producing fields that are still awaiting development. These fields contain oil reserves exceeding 87 billion barrels, constituting 59% of Iraq’s total proven oil reserves. Basra’s crude oil production reached 3.634 million barrels per day, or 82.2% of Iraq’s total oil production.
