An Analysis of the Film "Another Round" Based on Christopher Vogler's "The Writer's Journey" Model
Abstract This research examines Thomas Vinterberg's film "Another Round" as a case study for analyzing the application of Christopher Vogler's "The Writer's Journey" model in a European psychological drama. The central research problem is the feasibility of adapting a realistic narrative, devoid of traditional epic elements, to Vogler's twelve-stage structure (Hero's Journey). Using a descriptive-analytical method, this paper demonstrates that the inner journey of the protagonist, Martin, along with his friends, to overcome a midlife crisis, corresponds precisely with Vogler's stages and archetypes. Key findings indicate that the film modernizes this structure through an innovative reimagining of the archetypes; a scientific theory plays the role of the "Mentor," alcohol addiction functions as the "Shapeshifter," and the existential crisis embodies the "Shadow". It is concluded that "Another Round" not only proves the flexibility of Vogler's model in analyzing art-house cinema but also presents a final "Elixir" that is not a material gain but an existential state: the acceptance of life's duality and the reclaiming of youthful passion, culminating in Martin's liberating dance at the film's end.
