Development of Hybrid Electrospun Natural Fibre Composites with Nanocellulose Reinforcement: Dynamic Mechanical Characterisation for Enhanced Performance and Biocompatibility
Natural fibre-reinforced composites (NFRCs) are increasingly valued as eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic materials, but their adoption is hindered by poor strength, moisture absorption, and weak interfacial bonding. This research proposes a novel approach: reinforcing NFRCs with electrospun nanocellulose to enhance performance for demanding biomedical applications, particularly lower-limb prosthetics. Using cotton and hemp fibres in a polycaprolactone (PCL) matrix, electrospinning will ensure uniform nanocellulose dispersion and stronger fibre–matrix adhesion. Mechanical, thermal, and biocompatibility evaluations will determine performance improvements. Expected results include superior tensile strength, reduced moisture uptake, and greater durability, advancing sustainable, high-performance composites for healthcare and structural applications.
