PATTERN: from pilot to practice – advancing Open and Responsible Research Training: empowering researchers through modular, inclusive training in RRI and Open Science.

The PATTERN (Empowering Open and Responsible Research and Innovation) project addresses a critical need in the European Research Area, by equipping researchers at all stages of their careers with skills in Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Open Science (OS). Since January 2023, the project has been developing and piloting training modules in 8 thematic areas: Open Access, FAIR RDM, Citizen Science, Research Integrity, Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination, Science Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation of Results, and Research Management and Leadership. During the first pilot phase (May 2024-February 2025), PATTERN implemented 29 training sessions - 27 of which were evaluated - in 17 partner institutions. The sessions were delivered in face-to-face (59%), online (33%) and hybrid (7%) formats, using platforms such as OpenPlato and LearningPlanet (Project-Based Learning). Each session had an average of 30 participants, reaching approximately 870 individuals from different disciplines, career stages and with a strong representation of women (67%). Feedback from 441 participants showed high satisfaction: 78% considered the content clear, 89.3% considered it relevant and over 90% reported active involvement. The face-to-face formats promoted greater interaction, while the hybrid formats aroused greater interest. Strengths included a broad outreach, modular design and academic integration. The main challenges are related to the usability of the platform, practical involvement and adapting the content to the needs of the participants. With this poster, we aim to share the main results of the first pilot phase, highlight lessons learned and present our approach for the second phase (Mar-Dec 2025), focused on improving interactivity, enhancing reuse and ensuring sustainability in line with Open Science infrastructures such as OpenPlato and EOSC.

Abstract

The face-to-face formats promoted greater interaction, while the hybrid formats aroused greater interest. Strengths included a broad outreach, modular design and academic integration.
