The impact of wearable diabetes technology on sexual activity

Despite wearable diabetes devices becoming more widespread, little has been written about their use in relation to sexual activity. This small, qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to investigate their impact on sexual activity in people living with type 1 diabetes in the UK. Eleven participants who met the inclusion criteria completed the interviews, from which four main themes emerged: the impact of wearable diabetes devices on relationships with partners; their impact on sexual activity and blood glucose levels; strategies to improve healthcare professionals’ knowledge of the impact of devices on sexual activity; and potential technological improvements to address negative impacts on sexual activity. Insights into these themes and how the participants deal with them are discussed.
