Ichthyofauna of Epinephelidae from Mie Prefecture, Japan

A survey of ichthofauna of the family Epinephelidae in Mie Prefecture confirmed the distribution of 43 species (two species of Diploprioninae, 38 Epinephelinae, one Grammistinae, two Liopropominae). The following 12 species represent new records from the prefecture: Cephalopholis argus Schneider, 1801, Cephalopholis sonnerati (Valenciennes, 1828), Epinephelus fuscoguttatus (Forsskål, 1775), Epinephelus hexagonatus (Forster, 1801), Epinephelus lanceolatus (Bloch, 1790), Epinephelus macrospilos (Bleeker, 1855), Epinephelus melanostigma Schultz, 1953, Epinephelus merra Bloch, 1793, Epinephelus radiatus (Day, 1868), Epinephelus tukula Morgans, 1959, Saloptia powelli Smith, 1964, and Liopropoma japonicum (Döderlein, 1883). Epinephelus bleekeri (Vaillant, 1878), Epinephelus coeruleopunctatus (Bloch, 1790), Epinephelus coioides (Hamilton, 1822), Epinephelus epistictus (Temminck and Schlegel, 1843), Epinephelus latifasciatus (Temminck and Schlegel, 1843), Epinephelus malabaricus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), and Epinephelus quoyanus (Valenciennes, 1830) are new records based on specimens. Most of those species are mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. Records of Cephalopholis boenak (Bloch, 1790), Epinephelus bontoides (Bleeker, 1855), E. fuscoguttatu, E. hexagonatus, and S. powelli represent the northernmost records of these species.
