POLYVALENCE IN SYNTAX: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS IN UZBEK AND ENGLISH

This paper investigates the concept of polyvalence in syntactic structures with a comparative focus on Uzbek and English. Valency theory, initiated by Tesnière, describes the combinatory potential of verbs and their ability to determine sentence structure. In Uzbek and English, polyvalence manifests in unique ways due to typological differences: Uzbek as an agglutinative language with flexible word order and rich morphology, and English as an analytic language with relatively fixed word order. By analyzing examples from both languages, this study highlights similarities, divergences, and functional consequences of polyvalent structures. The findings suggest that polyvalence is not merely a syntactic phenomenon but also a cognitive and semantic one, influencing linguistic processing, language teaching, and translation practices.
