Thermal management of batteries in electric vehicles is a crucial factor that directly affects the performance, safety, and lifespan of the batteries. If the battery temperature deviates from the optimal range, it can lead to cell degradation, reduced performance, or even hazardous damage to the system. This research aims to design, develop, and evaluate the performance of a battery thermal management system using chilled water mixed with antifreeze as a medium for heat dissipation. The system is designed to lower the temperature to a low level without freezing and operates in conjunction with a Vapor Compression Refrigeration System. Experimental results showed that the system can maintain a uniform temperature distribution within the battery module, with a temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the chilled water of only 1–2°C, demonstrating effective convection heat transfer. Furthermore, the flow rate of the chilled water affects the cooling performance. A flow rate of 4 L/min and a chilled water temperature of 15°C were found to be optimal in terms of both cooling efficiency and energy consumption. The system was able to reduce the battery temperature from 60°C to a steady state below 40°C within 5 minutes. The rate of temperature reduction depends on the initial battery temperature, the temperature of the chilled water, and the flow rate of the chilled water. Overall, the developed thermal management system demonstrates high efficiency, stability, and potential for practical application in future commercial electric vehicles.
