Irradiation Testing of Electronic Space Components in the Framework of ASIF Infrastructure
Evaluating the impact of space radiation on electronic devices is critical for ensuring the success and longevity of space missions. In particular, the increasing use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components in the space sector presents both opportunities and challenges due to their lack of space-specific certifications. To mitigate risks associated with space radiation, components undergo rigorous testing, including Total Ionizing Dose (TID), Total Non-Ionizing Dose (TNID), and Single Event Effects (SEEs) evaluations. This study presents the radiation hardness testing of optocouplers, devices crucial for providing electrical isolation in space applications, under both TID (gamma) and TNID (neutron) irradiation. The tests were conducted at two Italian facilities: the ENEA Calliope Gamma Irradiation Facility and the ENEA Frascati Neutron Generator. The results reveal distinctive behaviors of the devices under irradiation, contributing valuable insights into their reliability in space environments. The irradiation facilities are part of the ASIF network, which supports the space community by providing high-quality testing services for radiation-hardening electronic components. Activities related to test setup, standardized procedures, quality and safety aspects, access and use of the irradiation facility will be continuously improved in order to broaden knowledge and application also to radiation studies for human exploration.
