ABSTRACT: The teaching of foreign languages has evolved significantly over time, initially focusing on grammar- and translation-based approaches, and gradually shifting to communicative and action-oriented methodologies. In the case of Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE) in the Algerian context, this methodological shift has been notable, with current teaching prioritizing the development of oral skills, which are considered the main objective of the teaching-learning process. To understand cultural norms, social contexts, and the subtleties of language in everyday use, the development of sociocultural competence enables students not only to communicate appropriately but also to interact more authentically in real-life situations. Within this framework, we take as an example the content of the textbook Puertas Abiertas, aimed at third-year secondary school students, and analyze the linguistic competences it includes. We aim to show how this sociocultural skill directly contributes to the development of oral fluency and accuracy, which are key goals in the teaching of ELE. This synergy between oral and sociocultural competence highlights the importance of adapting teaching methods to the specific needs of our students.
