A Study on Teacher-AI Interaction for English Language Learning Materials in Math Discipline
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAl) systems, such as ChatGPT, are increasingly utilized in global higher education. Given the increasing interest in understanding AI's alignment with human values and needs, human-centered artificial intelligence (HCAI) has emerged as a promising approach to address the problems in creating EMI teaching materials. This study aims to apply concepts of Human-centered AI in practice-based research on ESAP teaching material creation in the discipline of mathematics. The procedure includes the establishment of a Human-AI Interaction framework in terms of its content and procedure, and based on the specific AI generations, ethical and performance values are discussed by the interdisciplinary team of EAP and math teachers. It is found that the Human-AI Interaction procedure of setting goals, issuing instructions, analyzing feedback, and adjusting strategies support AI augmentation in terms of teaching objectives and teaching materials, and the application of compounded cross-disciplinary pedagogical theories and practice in the human-AI interaction amplifies human intelligence to the context of a new disciplinary area. These findings imply the central role of human teachers can be strengthened in the interaction between the team of human teachers and AI, and the importance of cross-disciplinary co-construction of goals and values for the AI-driven teaching material.
