Enhancing System Stability Through B ESS Integration in Stand-Alone Hybrid Power Systems
This paper presents a comprehensive study on the integration of battery energy storage systems in hybrid power plants for stand-alone power supply applications as well as for off-grid distributed energy system (Microgrid off-grid). The research combines simulation modeling using MATLAB/Simulink and empirical testing to evaluate the performance of a novel battery energy storage systems control algorithm during transitional events between diesel generators and renewable energy sources. Simulation results indicate that the implemented strategy maintains a nearly ideal sinusoidal waveform - with harmonic distortions not exceeding 3.2% - while achieving seamless load transfer without interruptions. In real-world tests, the battery energy storage systems ensured that frequency deviations remained within 0.2 Hz even under rapid load changes, thereby confirming the system's dynamic stability and reliability. Moreover, the study demonstrates the potential for substituting spinning reserve with battery energy storage systems, leading to significant improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. These outcomes underscore the critical role of advanced control algorithms and state-of-the-art battery energy storage systems technology in enhancing the performance of isolated power systems and promoting sustainable energy management.
