Lithics, Fire, and Poison: Dangerous Technologies and the Co-Evolution of Grammar

This paper explores the co-evolution of human grammar and dangerous technologies in prehistory. By analyzing the cultural transmission of stone tools, fire management, and poison preparation, it argues that grammatical structures—such as conditional, causal, and prohibitive forms—emerged as essential mechanisms for safe knowledge transfer. Whereas mimicry or isolated words were insufficient to ensure survival, grammar enabled humans to convey stepwise procedures, warnings, and abstract rules. The study situates language not merely as a tool for communication or social bonding, but as a cultural safeguard that developed in tandem with the mastery of hazardous technologies.
