IoT-based smart waste monitoring with advanced optical sensors for urban environmental protection
Protecting our environment is steadily becoming a global problem, and smart environments based IoT seems to provide ways to enhance sustainability and efficiency in waste management. This paper describes the design and implementation of smart waste monitoring and detection using Raspberry Pi with other environmental sensors to improve waste management practices and minimize pollution in the metropolitan areas. The system collects and processes the real-time data of the garbage levels, temperature, and humidity that allows implementing dynamic supervision of waste containers and their condition. With the advancement of technologies in internet of things, the system enables remote control of waste bins, predictive control, and waste resource management. The use of the sensors together with the Raspberry Pi in the system achieves inexpensive and highly effective for information systems for managing urban wastes that protect the ecosystem. Results show that, the system is effective in enhancing cleaner and sustainable urban areas and can be adopted in smart cities and other environmental protection programs.
