Reactivity Patterns in Baylis-Hillman Ketones: Diversity and Intrigue
The Morita–Baylis–Hillman (MBH) ketone is a multifunctional molecule with seemingly endless possibilities for modification. Our recent studies on these reactive olefins, which are obtained by a simple oxidation of MBH adducts, have led to some exciting observations and distinct reactivity patterns, while also affording access to a diverse array of heterocyclic scaffolds (Scheme 1). Recently, we have also isolated a cyclic dienamine motif that can be utilized in further synthetic maneuvers for the construction of frameworks such as acridines, dibenzodiazepines, benzofurans, etc. Our experiences and insights on working with the interesting MBH ketone shall be discussed in the presentation.
