Continuously tunable liquid crystal linear polarization rotator

Polarization converters based on liquid crystals (LCs) have been extensively developed for applications in displays, laser systems, optical communications, and more. In this study, we present a continuously electro-tunable linear polarization rotator constructed using 90° twisted-nematic liquid crystals (90°-TNLCs), offering the unique capability of electrically controllable linear polarization rotation while maintaining a high degree of linear polarization. Furthermore, we extend our approach to a tandem configuration of 180°-TNLC devices, enabling polarization rotation that is independent of the incident light’s initial polarization state. This advancement significantly enhances the device's versatility for the modulation of linearly polarized light.
