Methodology for Teaching Programming Based on a Semiotic Approach
This paper explores the application of the semiotic approach in programming education, emphasizing its role in enhancing students' understanding of abstract concepts through structured representation and interpretation of signs. Programming languages, considered as formal symbolic systems, provide a solid foundation for students to grasp and apply programming principles effectively. The semiotic approach facilitates the connection between theoretical knowledge and practical applications by treating programming constructs as interconnected frameworks. By employing semiotic principles, students develop their analytical thinking abilities through symbol analysis and manipulation. This approach incorporates problem-solving scenarios with symbolic representations, allowing students to establish cognitive connections between real-world problems and programming elements. The study highlights how semiotic engineering, combined with flow-based programming, simplifies complex programming concepts by utilizing visual programming platforms to minimize cognitive load and enhance learning efficiency. Furthermore, the research examines the integration of semiotic tools in programming instruction, demonstrating their potential to bridge the gap between conceptual understanding and practical implementation. Through various representational systems such as diagrams, equations, and simulations, students can achieve a deeper understanding of programming concepts and engage more effectively with the learning process. The findings suggest that incorporating semiotic principles in programming curricula leads to improved student motivation, engagement, and comprehension, particularly in the early stages of learning. The study concludes that the semiotic approach presents a promising direction for future pedagogical development, offering an effective framework for teaching programming in higher education.
