Exploring the Supply-Demand Characteristics of Low-Carbon Power Systems in Financial Hub Cities: A Case Study of Hong Kong
To achieve carbon neutrality, financial hub cities with limited resources are shifting from a fossil fuel-based generation structure to a more sustainable one. This research uses the power systems of Hong Kong as a case study and a novel power system evaluation framework based on real-world data at high spatiotemporal resolution is developed to analyze the supplydemand characteristics and explore the optimal energy structure under various scenarios for 2035. In this framework, the load demand of Hong Kong is initially introduced by simulating the load consumption patterns of typical, buildings. Recommendable wind and solar energy projects are identified based on the supply-demand characteristics and economic performance. The results show that seeking regional cooperation can effectively reduce economic costs and carbon emissions, ranging from 6.12% to 9.73% of total costs (approximately 2.37 to 8.56 billion USD) and from 43.66% to 59.10% of total, emissions (approximately 7,479.89 to 10,125.39 ktCOFyear).
