Hybrid Wireless Power Transfer for Implantable Medical Device: Comparison of Coupling Methods

Wireless power transfer (WPT) from outside to inside the body is required to charge implantable medical devices such as neurostimulators. In this study, we propose a hybrid WPT method that combines capacitive coupling using electrodes and inductive coupling using coils for implantable environment. For evaluating proposed hybrid WPT system, we calculated electromagnetic field distribution and the power transfer efficiency via electromagnetic field simulation. Simulation results confirmed that the hybrid approach outperformed either coupling method alone. They also showed concurrent generation of electric and magnetic fields, validating dual-mode operation in an implantable setting.
