A Methodology for Extracting Basis Words from “Uzbek Primary School Corpus”

The issue of extracting basis words creates several conveniences for language learners, schoolchildren, and also philologists. In this paper, basis words represent a set of words that can be employed to express other words. Typically, such words include common nouns, verbs, adjectives and other parts of speech that form the basis of everyday communication. High-frequency detection was used in this work. We present a methodology and program in Python language for identifying high-frequency words and extracting basis words, which is based on an explanatory dictionary of synonyms for the Uzbek language and the Uzbek Primary School Corpus. The present study was conducted through a research method that entailed the collection of 35 primary school textbooks for grades 1–4. The collection had been approved by the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the authors had named this collection the “Uzbek Primary School Corpus”. The school corpus consists of 109,204 tokens. The analysis of this data set revealed that first-grade students should be expected to recognise 366 basis words, second-grade students 462, third-grade students 486, and fourth-grade students 512.
