Ethical Reflections on Assisted Reproductive Treatment Following Cervical Resection for Cervical Cancer
This paper presents a case involving a woman of reproductive age who, after undergoing cervical resection for cervical cancer, achieved pregnancy through assisted reproductive technology (ART) but experienced preterm birth. Using this clinical case as a basis, the study explores the fertility needs and challenges faced by women following cervical cancer surgery, the associated risks of assisted reproduction, and the ethical considerations involved. It aims to remind reproductive specialists that while respecting the reproductive rights of patients and their partners, it is equally essential to provide thorough counseling regarding the potential risks of post-surgical pregnancy to the patient, offspring, and partner. Prior to initiating ART, medical professionals should enhance communication with the patient, adhere to ethical principles such as beneficence, informed consent, the welfare of the offspring, and social welfare, and ensure oversight by ethics committees. In cases where risks outweigh benefits, clinicians should consider advising against proceeding with assisted reproduction to prevent misuse of medical technology.
