Radial-Layered Procedural Dungeon Generation
Making complex and enjoyable game levels can be easily done using procedural dungeon generation. Usually, traditional approaches use charts or straight lines which can prevent designers from coming up with fresh levels. In this paper, we introduce a new Radial-Layered Procedural Dungeon Generation algorithm that groups rooms on concentric rings stemming from a central point. Such flexibility makes this method suitable for various ways to play and for games in both 2D and 3D formats. Allowing users arrange rooms across the map as they please and use different themes, our system breaks with traditional dungeon generation patterns. We present the algorithm’s design, the adjustable values it requires and we prove its effectiveness with several practical combinations.
