Alexandru Marghiloman at the Service of Creating Greater Romania
The young and ambitious Alexandru Marghiloman, very rich, charming, sporty, gallant, modern, who was making waves at the balls of the Bucharest elite, was attracted by his political career. In order to obtain the dignities, he had as arguments the thoroughness of legal knowledge, the talent of orator, the public and private attire, the political maturity of conservative convictions. By calling Alexandru Marghiloman and the conservatives to government in March 1918, King Ferdinand I showed profound wisdom. His mandate was dealt two blows to the Romanian state: the disaster caused by the war and the political cowardice of those who did not want to take responsibility for failure until the end. The fate of the country (implicitly of the population remaining in Oltenia, Wallachia, Dobrogea and southern Moldavia) of the Romanian army and dynasty was at stake. Alexandru Marghiloman, under time pressure, conducted difficult negotiations with the Germans and Austrians for the success of the Union of Bessarabia with the Motherland, and afterwards a new opportunity appeared before the Marghiloman Government, the Union of Bukovina with Romania.
