An Intelligent Sensor Fusion Object Detection System with LiDAR and Camera
Intelligent object detection is paramount for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and the future of autonomous vehicles, playing a critical role in enhancing road safety. While camera-based systems provide rich visual data for identifying objects, they often struggle to accurately estimate the distance to those objects—a vital factor for collision avoidance—especially under varying environmental conditions. This paper presents a sensor-fusion object detection system that integrates LiDAR and camera data to overcome these limitations. Our approach begins with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), trained through transfer learning, to reliably detect road obstacles in camera images. We then leverage 3D point cloud data from LiDAR to precisely calculate the distance to these detected objects by overlaying the transformed LiDAR data onto the camera image. This technique takes advantage of LiDAR’s superior depth accuracy to enhance the semantic context provided by the camera. By effectively combining the complementary strengths of both sensors, our system enables timely and accurate collision warnings. Experimental results demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of this sensor-fusion approach for both object detection and high-precision distance estimation in real-world driving scenarios.
