The colored Talbot carpet: multifocal focusing of RGB Talbot self-imaging via multispectral zone plates
Diffractive optical elements are typically designed for a narrow wavelength band, limiting their multispectral functionality. Here, we introduce a novel diffractive optic consisting of the superposition of multiple planar zone plates, combined with Talbot self-imaging principles, to achieve multi-wavelength imaging in a single compact planar structure. The “RGB Talbot Zone Plate” unites multifocal and multispectral operation, enabling simultaneous precise self-imaging for several wavelength channels. Each superimposed zone plate is optimized for a specific spectral range (e.g., red, green, blue), and their geometric overlap yields regions of selective color transmission and focusing. This approach permits color-correct, spatially resolved Talbot self-images without the need for surface curvature or segmentation, allowing seamless integration into flat optical components such as display panels, sensors, and imaging devices. Potential applications include advanced autostereoscopic displays, multispectral sensors, and hybrid optical data processing.
