Ground-based Optical Observation Methods for Space Situational Awareness at the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern
Due to the recent increase of Resident Space Objects (RSOs), the need for Space Situational Awareness (SSA) is rising. Amongst different measurement techniques, optical observations play a key role to get accurate estimates of the state of RSOs. The Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern (AIUB) has contributed to the SSA community by providing passive and active optical observations via multiple telescopes. In this paper the different measurement techniques, namely astrometry, photometry and satellite laser ranging are explained. The different measurement observables are highlighted and the derived information discussed.
