Teaching Cybersecurity with CTF: New Pedagogical Methods and Strategies
Cybersecurity education requires innovative approaches to effectively develop students' practical skills and critical thinking. One of the most impactful methods is integrating Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions-interactive cybersecurity challenges designed to simulate real-world attack and defense scenarios. These competitions combine elements of gamification and problem-solving, providing learners with hands-on experience in identifying vulnerabilities, securing systems, and applying theoretical knowledge in practice. Beyond technical skills, Capture the Flag competitions enhance teamwork, analytical thinking, and decision-making under pressure. This paper explores the role of Capture the Flag competitions as a pedagogical tool in cybersecurity education, emphasizing their ability to bridge the gap between academic theory and industry demands. Furthermore, the study outlines strategies for effectively incorporating these competitions into educational curricula, ensuring inclusivity and adaptability to diverse learning environments. Implementing Capture the Flag competitions in classrooms fosters active learning, increases student engagement, and helps build a skilled cybersecurity workforce ready to face evolving digital threats. The findings support the growing importance of practical, hands-on methodologies in cybersecurity education.
