Optimized Battery Thermal Management using Smart Hybrid Cooling Techniques for Electric Vehicle Applications
Lithium-Ion batteries, the most commonly used in EVs, perform well in medium-range temperatures and retain most of their capacity after many charge cycles. Their high energy density and power-to-weight ratio make them ideal for EVs, as their lightweight ions travel easily between electrodes. These batteries operate best between 20°C and 25°C, but overheating can degrade their lifespan and reduce range, especially during rapid discharges. The proposed system introduces a multi-stage cooling method for high-efficiency electric vehicle (EV) battery packs. The system operates in three stages to maintain optimal battery temperature. The first stage activates air cooling to address moderate temperature increases. If critical conditions persist, the second stage engages enhanced Liquid cooling with a high-power coolant integrated with a secondary pump. In the final stage, both the air cooling and liquid cooling techniques will be integrated to perform together. Additionally, Thermo-Electric generators (TEGs) used to maintain the optimal temperature by heating the battery pack. Whenever the temperature goes below 25°C the TEG module will be activated. Microcontroller-Driven hardware and sophisticated control algorithms dynamically enhance the cooling process for optimal efficiency. This hybrid cooling system ensures the battery pack remains within the ideal temperature range, greatly enhancing performance, safety, and efficiency. The hybrid cooling system ensures optimal battery temperature for maximum efficiency. Addressing critical temperature fluctuations with a multi-stage approach enhances battery lifespan and contributes to sustainable and efficient EV technology.
