Extended Data for In Situ Method for Quantifying Tritium Production from 10B(n, t+2α) Using Boron Loaded Scintillator
Accurate neutron cross section data is important for nuclear science applications, including modeling, benchmarking, and reactor design. For the 10B channel, the production of tritium through fast neutron reactions on 10B is of interest for both nuclear data and fuel cycles applications. Current cross section data for the 10B channel is sparse and inconsistent, making it difficult to evaluate this reaction with confidence. This work reviews the current state of both experimental and evaluated nuclear data for the reaction. We propose a simple in situ measurement methodology in which boron loaded liquid scintillator is irradiated with 14.1 MeV neutrons, and tritium is quantified directly by liquid scintillation counting in the same sealed vial. This eliminates the need for chemical separation and minimizes experimental complexity. Preliminary calculations indicate that, under realistic irradiation conditions, the setup can generate measurable tritium activity above established detection limits for low background liquid scintillation techniques. Simulations confirm that the thin target approximation is reasonable for a 5 wt% boron solution.
