Algorithm for Hexahedral Mesh Generation with Pre-Thining of 3D Object Points

The paper presents the development of an algorithm for generating a non-uniform hexahedral computational mesh suitable for use with the finite difference time domain (FDTD), finite integration technique or transmission line modeling numerical electromagnetic solvers. A key feature of the proposed algorithm is the incorporation of a pre-thinning function for the modelled 3D object points, allowing the use of the generator for curved objects defined as a set of faces (in STL or OBJ formats). The paper begins with a detailed description of the developed algorithm, using flowcharts to illustrate its functionality, and then evaluates the performance of the algorithm using two curved structures: a planar spiral inductive coil and a circular microstrip resonator. The mesh generated for these structures is used to simulate the S-parameters by the author's FDTD solver, and these results are then compared with those obtained from commercial electromagnetic simulation software. The comparison confirms the correctness of the developed mesh generation algorithm and the acceptable accuracy of the FDTD code.
