Evolución de la visualización de datos electorales en prensa / The Evolution of Voting Data Visualization in the Newspapers
This article conducts a diachronic analysis of electoral data visualisation in El Correo, a leading newspaper in Spain, from the dawn of Spanish democracy to the early 21st century. Focusing on infographics related to election results—a consistent and quantitatively rich journalistic genre—the study maps the evolution of visual journalism in response to technological, editorial, and aesthetic transformations. Using archival research, nearly 200 examples are analysed, illustrating key phases: from rudimentary, hand-drawn charts and delayed publication timelines, to the professionalisation and computerisation of infographic design. The article highlights milestones such as the adoption of Macintosh and design software, the emergence of specialised infographic departments, and the gradual integration of colour and stylistic coherence. Notably, it identifies how editorial workflows shifted, allowing for decentralised infographic production, improving both efficiency and clarity.
