Interactividad y participación ciudadana en los medios vascos en Internet / Interactivity and Citizen’s Participation in the Basque Media on Internet

This study explores the integration of interactivity and citizen participation in Basque digital media during the first quarter of 2007. Through a comprehensive analysis of 116 online media outlets—including newspapers, radio stations, and television networks—the research assesses the degree to which these platforms utilise interactive features such as hyperlinking, user customisation, and multi-directional communication channels. Despite the potential offered by digital technologies, findings reveal that interactivity remains underutilised. Few outlets implement hyperlink structures or contextualised journalism, and personalisation options are largely absent. Although mechanisms like RSS and forums are more common among newspapers, direct feedback tools (e.g., contact with journalists or content correction) are rarely provided. The research highlights a fragmented adoption of interactive practices, underlining structural resistance and editorial inertia as key limitations. This work contributes to the understanding of digital journalism’s evolution in peripheral contexts, emphasising the necessity for media to adapt to participatory paradigms to remain relevant. It also provides a useful benchmark for comparative studies on digital communication strategies and audience engagement.
