Tendencias en el diseño de los diarios vascos y navarros en Internet / Tendencies in the design of online newspapers in the Basque Country and Navarre

This study analyses the distinctive traits of news design in major digital newspapers from the Basque Country and Navarre. Through content analysis of homepage structures and design elements, the paper identifies the interplay between chronological and editorial criteria in the arrangement of information. The research highlights the prevalence of vertical layouts, excessive textual content, and limited multimedia integration, which, despite offering depth, may hinder readability and user experience. The evolution from traditional “L-shaped” layouts to horizontally divided interfaces with top menus suggests a shift in web architecture guided by usability and user interaction. Key aspects assessed include typographic hierarchies, use of white space, hyperlinking strategies, and participatory elements such as forums and blogs. The findings underscore a persistent textual dominance and minimal adoption of interactive or visual elements, revealing a strong continuity with print-based journalism. The study concludes that although digital newspapers in these regions have embraced formal aspects of web design, significant challenges remain in enhancing user engagement, multimedia integration, and content navigation. These insights contribute to understanding regional adaptations in digital journalism and provide practical guidance for improving user-oriented online news design.
