Efekt przewagi obrazu nad słowem – badania własne
This article focuses on explaining the meaning of the term, ,,picture superiority effect”,together with an overview of the most important studies verifying the existence of this effectand the factors that may influence its occurrence. In addition, the author presents her own ex-perimental study on the occurrence of the picture superiority effect, when factors such as theway in which the subjects were instructed to perform the experimental tasks are changed. Fortystudents at the University of Szczecin were examined. The results obtained from the study indi-cate that there is no occurence of the picture superiority effect. In addition, it can be concluded, that the instructions given before the test about the need to remember the concepts shown hada positive effect on the subsequent memorisation of pictorial concepts as well as verbal concepts. In contrast, not being informed about the need to memorise resulted in a decrease in the numberof memorised concepts in both groups of subjects. As it also turns out, another factor that wassignificant for both verbal and pictorial concepts was the way in which they were memorised.Free memorisation had a positive effect on the memorisation of verbal concepts, whereas noeffect of free memorisation was shown on the amount of pictorial concepts memorised. Memo-rising in the order imposed in advance, i.e. in the order in which the concepts were shownto the subjects during the presentation, had a positive effect on the recall of pictorial concepts. In contrast, no effect was found on the memorisation of verbal concepts. The author would liketo discuss the results of the analysed experiment and explain what might have influenced theiroccurrence.
