Among the eminent novelists who have established themselves as powerful voices in Assamese fiction, Dr. Mamoni Raisom Goswami holds a distinguished place. As one of the most prominent novelists of the Ramdhenu era, she successfully portrayed compassion for the oppressed, the anger of the marginalized, social hypocrisy, superstition, human emotions, and feminist perspectives through her novels. Her works exhibit not only thematic diversity but also wide and varied backgrounds. The subject matter of her novels encompasses incidents from different parts of India as well as Assam. Through her writings, Dr. Goswami has vividly highlighted the plight of widows, the insecurity of women, and the rebellion of deceived women, thereby bringing various women’s issues to the forefront. She strongly exposed the exploitation and injustices faced by women in a patriarchal society and asserted their rightful place and dignity. The feminist ideology, which seeks to recognize women as equal human beings alongside men, finds a strong voice in several of her novels. Two such works—Nilakanthi Braja and Dontal Hatir Une Khuwa Howdah—bring to life female characters who embody the spirit of protest and resilience. Through these characters, Goswami affirms the collective feminist consciousness of women.
