Homen Borgohain, a distinguished figure in post-independence Assamese literature, significantly contributed as a novelist, journalist, and essayist, engaging with almost every literary genre. His works reflect the psychological turmoil of the modern age—fear, despair, and disillusionment—shaped by war and societal transformation. Influenced by Western literary theories and philosophies, Borgohain introduced existential concerns into Assamese literature. Existentialism, rooted in reflections on the meaning of human existence, gained prominence in world literature after the devastations of the Second World War and found resonance in Borgohain’s writings. Among his works, the short story “Bhoi” (Fear) stands as a seminal text, portraying existential anxieties—particularly the fear of death and uncertainty about one’s own being. Through this narrative, Borgohain vividly captures the complexity of human consciousness and the psychological dimensions of existence. This paper analyzes the operation of existential thought within the human psyche as depicted in “Bhoi”, employing a descriptive method to highlight Borgohain’s role in articulating existentialist perspectives in Assamese literature.
