How "Open" is Open Science and the "LAK" in Open Science

On 30 September 2025, at the Istituto per il Lessico Intellettuale Europeo e Storia delle Idee (ILIESI–CNR) in Rome, we presented our work on Language-Agnostic Knowledge (LAK) in Open Science in a session convened by Dr. Cristina Marras. The event brought together philosophers, librarians, anthropologists, linguists, and other researchers, generating a deeply constructive and interdisciplinary dialogue. As part of my fellowship at ILIESI, supported by the OPERAS TNA program, this presentation outlined a re-imagining of scholarly workflows—ideation, access, synthesis, co-creation, and publication—through the lens of AI-driven multilingual infrastructure. We contrasted the structural limitations of monolingual knowledge production with the new affordances of AI, while also engaging critically with the barriers that remain—policy, cultural, economic, and ideological. The discussion highlighted both the urgency and the possibility of designing reparative infrastructures for epistemic justice in global knowledge systems. We are grateful to Cristina Marras, our host and organizer, and to all participants for their generous contributions to this ongoing conversation.

Abstract

On 30 September 2025, at the Istituto per il Lessico Intellettuale Europeo e Storia delle Idee (ILIESI–CNR) in Rome, we presented our work on Language-Agnostic Knowledge (LAK) in Open Science in a session convened by Dr. Cristina Marras.
