Constraint Theory of Psychopathology
This paper develops a theoretical framework in which consciousness and qualia are interpreted as solutions generated under multivariable conservation constraints within the brain. Enclosed by a rigid external shell, the brain maintains numerous conservation laws that enforce stability of its internal environment. External inputs create shifts and inhomogeneities in variable distributions, which manifest as gauge-like fields. The continuous resolution of these distortions produces immediate solutions—qualia—that define perception and awareness in real time. From this perspective, psychopathological phenomena such as sensory hypersensitivity, cognitive overdrive, or perceptual dulling are reconceptualized as deviations in the setting of conservation equations or as failures in adaptive restoration to external perturbations. Consciousness, therefore, is not an abstract emergent property but a dynamic process of solving constraint equations under boundary-imposed conditions.
