The Final Docking Point: On the Departure Beyond Return
This article, The Final Docking Point: On the Departure Beyond Return, reflects upon death and departure through the lens of Buddhism, spirituality, and cultural values of merit dedication. Drawing from canonical sources, particularly the Petavatthu verses in the Khuddaka Nikāya, it examines the Theravāda perspective on transferring merit to the departed, highlighting the conditions under which such merit may or may not be received. The study emphasizes the Buddharaksa approach, which focuses less on elaborate rituals and more on the serene and compassionate state of mind that dedicates merit with purity of intention. In its deeper contemplative dimension, true dedication is not only about offering merit but also about learning to “let go” and to respect the journey of the departed without clinging. The article serves both as a scholarly interpretation of Buddhist doctrine and as a spiritual tribute, integrating the fieldwork of the Buddharaksa Moral Community Project in supporting vulnerable individuals in life and providing dignity in death. Ultimately, it invites readers to rediscover the art of dying peacefully as a way to appreciate the value of living mindfully in the present.
