Deliverable 6.4 CRM serious game enabling the students to run CRM material flow simulations
Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) and the Life Cycle of a Smartphone – Online Game Raw materials are the backbone of the technologies and everyday goods we rely on. For EU industries, readily accessible raw materials are vital for ensuring innovation, economic stability, and sustained growth. However, many of these resources must be imported from outside the EU, making their availability a strategic priority. When rawmaterials significantly impact the EU economy and face high supply risks, they areclassified as CRMs. Currently, the EU has identified 34 raw materials as critical to its technological and economic development. CRMs are indispensable to modern technology and are central to achieving the green and digital transitions outlined in the European Green Deal. They power renewable energy systems, electric vehicles (EVs), and smartphones, driving progress across society and the economy. Recognising their importance, the European Commission is taking active steps to secure these resources and raise awareness about their role infostering sustainable growth and innovation in Europe. To enhance the awareness of the necessity of CRMs in supporting sustainable innovation, educational materials are being developed. These resources aim to educate students, citizens, decision-makers, and future entrepreneurs about the significance of CRMs, emphasising their contribution to Europe's sustainability goals. To further this mission, an open-access online game focusing on the smartphone lifecycle and CRM usage is created. This interactive tool will allow players to explore CRM material flows and gain a deeper understanding of their essential applications. By fostering awareness and understanding, the initiative ensures that the next generationis equipped to navigate and support the green and digital transition effectively. The main purpose of the CRM smartphone game is to educate and engage players onthe role of CRMs in the smartphone life cycle and their broader significance in sustainability and the European Green Deal. The game will guide players through the smartphone's life cycle, divided into stages such as design and development, industrial production (sourcing raw materials, raw material extraction, processing, smelting, refining, transport and logistics, manufacturing of different parts), assembly and packaging, usage, and post-usage (end of life, recycling). The game aims to raise awareness, promote sustainable thinking, and highlight the importance of CRMs in modern technology, circular economy, and green energy transition.
