Motion of spinning cylinders on a horizontal surface
Abstract If a cylindrical object such as a disk or a coin or a tube is spun on a horizontal surface, then it behaves like a spinning top and can keep spinning for several minutes if friction is small. A wide variety of different effects can be observed, all of which demonstrate the relation between torque and angular momentum. A spinning tube can rise vertically like a spinning egg or tippe top and can even jump off the surface if it rises fast enough. Supplementary videos are presented to help stimulate interest in the topic.
