Bioeconomy Visions and National Strategies. A Bibliometric Analysis

Bioeconomy could be characterized as an interdisciplinary topic. During the last decades bioeconomic related research gained interest among the members of the scientific community, as this is depicted by an increase number of publications (Gould et., al 2023). Nevertheless, the perception about what bioeconomy represents vary. The Bioeconomy definitions as well as the bioeconomy strategies across the globe could be divided in three categories based on the vision they follow, each vision is characterized by different priorities goals and perceptions (Bugge et al., 2016). The biotechnology vision emphasizes in the utilization of knowledge from biological sciences and the application of biotechnology in the economic activities, the bioresource vision aims to replace non renewable resources with biomass in order to fulfil economy’s need and, the bioecology vision highlights the significance of ecological processes in economic systems (Proestou et al., 2024). Approximately 50 countries have developed or currently developing bioeconomy strategies worldwide, each national strategy tend to belong in one of the vision or include elements from different visions leading to hybrid paradigms (Proestou et., al 2024, Gardossi et al., 2023). A bioeconomy strategy formulation depends on the geographical area, the historical path of a region, the socio-economic factors as well as natural resources capacity (Van den Bergh and Kallis, 2013; De Besi and McCormick, 2015; Bracco et al., 2018).
