Digital Kisan Platform and the Future of E-Extension
Agricultural extension has long been seen as a key component in technology transfer, capacity building, and rural development. Traditionally, Indian extension programs were primarily reliant on physical interactions between extension workers and farmers. However, with the fast advancement of information and communication technologies (ICTs), a paradigm change is taking place towards digital extension, or e-Extension. The Digital Kisan Platform (DKP) is designed as an integrated online ecosystem that uses mobile technology, artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud-based services to give real-time agricultural advice, market intelligence, weather predictions, and access to government programs. This article looks at the Digital Kisan Platform's evolution, function, and future possibilities for boosting e-Extension. The conversation focusses on potential to democratise agricultural knowledge, improve farmer decision-making, and promote sustainable agriculture, while also addressing issues including digital literacy, infrastructural limitations, and data privacy. It finds that the DKP is a significant step towards more inclusive, demand-driven, and climate-smart extension systems in India.
