Protesting for Europe in Georgia
The Georgian government’s decision to suspend accession negotiations with the European Union in November 2024 triggered a massive wave of protests that continues to this day. These protests are characterized by mistrust and by hope. There is mistrust not only of the ruling party, but also of party politics as a whole, creating a dual crisis in Georgia’s current political situation. Yet Europe represents a container of hope that the protesters are willing to defend. This hope in Europe’s potential is a unifying factor across different political factions, and it could serve as a catalyst for democratic change in Georgia.
