Proactive Memory Systems: Opportunity and Threat
Artificial intelligence is evolving from reactive tools into proactive assistants capable of retaining contextual memory, analyzing user behavior, and providing personalized recommendations beyond active sessions. These proactive memory systems promise transformative benefits for productivity, healthcare, and education, while also raising profound concerns regarding surveillance, profiling, and the erosion of autonomy. This article frames proactive memory as a double-edged sword: it can either accelerate human–AI symbiosis or entrench digital authoritarianism. To address this dilemma, the paper introduces the Universal BIOS framework, a normative protocol that emphasizes transparency, user control, and alignment with human evolution. The framework is illustrated through case studies, literature synthesis, and scenario analysis (2035 outlook), providing an ethical roadmap for the design and governance of proactive AI systems.
