Navigating Diversification with the GE-McKinsey Matrix: A Strategic Portfolio Analysis of ITC Limited
This strategic portfolio analysis of Indian conglomerate ITC Limited utilises the GE-McKinsey Nine-Box Matrix to evaluate its diverse business units and formulate a roadmap for resource allocation and future growth. The analysis deconstructs the corporation into six Strategic Business Units (SBUs): FMCG-Cigarettes, FMCG-Others, Hotels, Paperboards & Packaging, Agri-Business, and IT Services. Each SBU is rigorously assessed on two dimensions—the external attractiveness of its industry and its internal competitive strength—to determine its strategic position. The findings reveal a clearly segmented portfolio with distinct roles. The FMCG-Others and Agri-Business units are identified as primary growth engines, positioned in the "Invest/Grow" zone due to their high strength in highly attractive markets. Conversely, the legacy FMCG-Cigarettes business is firmly placed in the "Harvest" zone, serving as the portfolio's cash generator, tasked with funding new initiatives. The Paperboards & Packaging, the recently demerged Hotels SBU, and the IT Services (ITC Infotech) units are located in the "Selectivity/Hold" category, representing strong businesses that require focused, selective investment to defend their market positions. The overarching strategic imperative for the conglomerate is to execute a deliberate and accelerated reallocation of capital. This involves systematically channelling the substantial cash flows generated by the mature Cigarettes SBU into the high-potential FMCG-Others and Agri-Business segments. This strategic pivot is deemed essential for de-risking the corporate portfolio from its dependence on the tobacco industry and securing a future of sustainable, long-term growth, thereby completing its transformation into a balanced and resilient entity.
