KOMPOSITIONSBESONERHEITEN HOMONYMER SUBSTANTIVE IM DEUTSCHEN

This article examines the challenges of distinguishing polysemous words from homonyms in German, addressing semantic divergence as the core problem. Adopting a methodological framework that combines structural, morphological, and contextual analysis, the study investigates 382 German homonymous nouns selected from the Langenscheidt Großwörterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache. Particular emphasis is placed on word-formation models, derivational bases, and compounding strategies to identify consistent patterns of semantic and structural divergence that facilitate clear diff erentiation. The analysis highlights how linking elements and stem variations in compounds serve as reliable indicators of semantic split, refi ning the boundaries between polysemy and homonymy for lexicographic classifi cation. Results demonstrate that homonymous nouns typically develop distinct morphological structures and derivational pathways, supporting systematic diff erentiation in both dictionary design and linguistic description. By providing an evidence-based, methodical approach to identifying homonymy in German nouns, the study contributes to improved semantic analysis, greater linguistic clarity, and practical guidance for lexicographers, language teachers, and comparative linguists. Ultimately, the fi ndings address long-standing issues in distinguishing homonyms from polysemous entries, off ering a theoretical framework that enhances precision in semantic categorization and supports the development of more accurate and user-friendly lexicographic resources.
